Subject: Testimonial for Pride Matters

Dear Dena,

I purchased a Harley, Ultra Classic in September of 2009. I soon realized I wasn't as confident as I use to be on two wheels, it had been a while since my riding days. I began searching the internet to look for a trike conversion kit. I found Lehman and was sold on the Renegade style. Then my search began for someone to do the conversion. Again, with the use of the internet I was fortunate enough to find M&J Motor Co. from Martinsburg, WV. They did an excellent job with the conversion and we just love it! My wife was not in favor of the two wheels but now with the trike she wants to ride everyday. Thanks Lehman, keep up the good work.

Sincerely,
Carl & Suzette Sprowls

Trip of a Lifetime

What started as a normal warm August morning, would be anything but normal. Cliff and I would usually dedicate a week in August to escape the heat of the city and head for the cool shade of the mountains. The extreme heat of the day in the upper altitudes of the Blue Ridge Parkway was discouraging. The higher we went, the hotter it got. Even more alarming was the appearance of deer along the roadside in the middle of the day while temperatures pressed triple digits. Exiting a canopy of trees into a relative straight stretch of road was the end of the trip and the beginning of the adventure as a deer leapt from the roadside bank into the front of his Harley-Davison Road King. Sliding 300 feet down the yellow lines, my riding buddy was at the mercy of inertia, hard pavement and gravity.

Our annual trek was suspended and future plans were being discussed while he convalesced. After the conclusion of his second working career on August 3rd, a year later, we would again challenge our riding determination. Retiring the previous day, Cliff, Jimmie and I embarked on the trip of a lifetime. And since this story is appearing in this publication, you know what we were riding.

The closest I had ever been to the Rocky Mountains had been Denver's Stapleton Airport, so we set our sights for Colorado from Martinsburg, West Virginia. Since we live in Martinsburg's Mountain State, mountain riding is not a new thing for us. What would be new were our riding steeds. Outfitted on 2008 GL1800 Lehman Monarch II's, we hit the highway on our planned 2-week jaunt. We followed I-70 across the country to Kansas City where we turned south through Wichita onto RT-50 and encountered our warmest temperatures. Our trikes were outfitted with all of the amenities including an ambient thermometer, which recorded 109 on the stretch west toward Pueblo, Colorado.

Our initial planning was allowing us 4 days for this part of the trip, but arriving there the afternoon of the 3rd day provided us with an extra day of Rocky Mountain touring. That afternoon we stopped at Royal Gorge, outside Canon City, Colorado and visited the World's Highest Suspension Bridge towering above the Arkansas River. The next day we made our way to the Famous Pike's Peak Scenic Highway and rode to the top of the famous summit (14,110 feet) two weeks after the annual Race to the Clouds event. Mount Evans was next on our list but the late day weather was deteriorating at that elevation so we meandered northward to Estes Park, Colorado. The entrance to Rocky Mountain National Forest was about 5 miles to our west so the next morning we toured the park. The road rose to over 12,000 feet in the most beautiful scenery I have ever witnessed other than in a movie theatre. The snow packs and mountain lakes were awesome even in the August air of 60 degrees. We then made our ways north into Wyoming toward Yellowstone. We were riding to the east of the Rockies where scenery was stark and hot and we adjusted our course when grass fires blocked our entry to Yellowstone Park. We entered the Yellowstone area about 20 miles north of Cody on Chief Joseph Skyway. Cody, Wyoming is famous for the founding son Buffalo Bill (William Cody). Mountainous canyons that lay before us were breathtaking as the road wove through the scenery like an asphalt river. We only toured the northeastern quadrant of the park and made many photo stops for buffalo and other things of interest.

Through the high plains of Montana we encountered the largest grasshopper population in the world. They seemed quite satisfied sitting on the roadway and as we approached they would commit mass-suicide on or fairings and fenders and entangling themselves in our wire wheels. One stop in Miles City, MT, I decided to wash the carcasses from my Trike only to discover that 15 miles later it would look the same. After leaving Great Falls, Montana, we traveled almost 100 miles through the grain heartland. Now I know where all the wheat and barley is being grown. There were very sparse stretches of roadway without electric or telephone cables. If you had a tree or two to plant, you could start your very own town since it appeared that most of the towns in the grassland had this in common. Lewistown, Montana was an overnight stop and just happened to be the exact geological center of Montana. Appropriately in the middle of nowhere, Lewistown is where WWII bomber crews would train for the use of the new secret bomb sighting equipment. I still think you could land a C5A here without being noticed by the locals.

On our return loop, we stopped in Spearfish, SD to visit the staff at the Lehman Trikes Factory. Our rides now demonstrated even better fuel mileage as we experienced a tailwind while heading east. Since I had traveled this route before, and we were trying to make Chicago the next day, and with the help of the tailwind, we operated above the posted speeds for this part of the trip. Cliff broke off in Chicago to visit a friend and Jimmie and I continued toward home. 13 days and 5800 miles later we arrived back home.

Lessons learned

This was a trip of a lifetime for us and there was no better way to view or experience the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains than on a trike. Working 6 days a week and hardly able to ride other than to and from work, it was time for a real break. There was not a single morning that I didn't look forward to riding all day (except 109 degrees in Kansas). We dodged the rain off and on, ran into road construction many times and even got lost. I encourage anyone that has a spirit of adventure to throw their house keys in the front yard and ride west. Take 2 weeks to discover the wonders of America that can be best experienced on a motorcycle or a Lehman Trike.

Pride of the Panhandle - M & J Motor Company

by Steve Lietz

In 1998, Jim and Janet White of Martinsburg, West Virginia had an inspiration: to start a business transforming ordinary two-wheeled motorcycles into Kings of the Three World and becoming a Lehman Trike dealer. It wasn't too long after that when Jim Murphy joined the team. M & J Motor Company was on its way to becoming the leading trike conversion company in the West Virginia Panhandle Region, bringing a unique blend of salesmanship and artistry to an important segment of the motorcycling scene.

They started out in a small garage and then moved into the present location with 6,500 square feet of showroom and shop space. Jim and Jimmy bring life to beautiful machines with a demand for perfection and an eye on value. The resulting product is worthy of praise and pride that will provide the owner with many miles of worry-free riding comfort. Together, the two Jims, continued to build the business and began to renovate an abandoned garage around the growing venture. The building is located on Queen Street in Martinsburg, West Virginia and now houses the Tier II Lehman dealership.

M & J Motor Company is more than a Lehman dealership, it is a place where trike people come to seek information, upgrades, and share in the kindness and wisdom of Jim and Jimmy's vast knowledge and dedication. They satisfy the customers unique needs with flair and style. Each trike is handled with the utmost of care, as if it were to be converted for their personal use. High standards and a personal demand for nothing less than the best for the customer gives each individual considering a trike, all the guarantee he/she will need in trusting this investment to M & J Motor Company.

Customer satisfaction is number one at M & J Motor Company. Customers who enter the store are not the only concern of this dynamic duo. Jim and Jimmy are frequently on the phone giving free advice to individuals about their bikes or trikes. Jim's goal is to make the trike as perfect as possible before it leaves the shop.

Each trike is an individual work of art, adapted to the needs of the individual rider. Individuals with unique needs will find a welcoming and resourceful shop where the trike is adapted to meet the highest in safety standards and utility. Adaptation of controls is a specialty at M & J. They have restored the ability of many individuals to once again enjoy freedom of the open road on a motorcycle.

You will enjoy many happy miles and memories motoring down the road.

Dropping by the Queen Street location to inquire about a trike and other products sold by M & J, one quickly acquires the knowledge necessary to make an informed decision. Dream Makers

by Julius E. "J" Jones

Everyone has dreams - whether they have been filled, unfulfilled, or about to be achieved. Since returning from Vietnam and with t he creation of the annual "Ride to the Wall" by Rolling Thunder, Inc., I have had the dream of someday being able to make that ride. As I aged through my fifties and now into my sixties, that dream appeared to be fading. That is, until I met the "Dream Makers" at M & J Motor Company, LLC in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Having never ridden on a motorcycle, I really did not know where to begin. M & J was a great beginning point. First, I was surprised when a call to M & J was actually answered by a human voice - a rarity in today's world of automatic phone responses. Jim Murphy took the time to fill me in on trike conversions and encouraged me to visit his operation. So the short trip became a no-brainer.

Jim took the time to show me around his facility and explain conversions of various motorcycles. He offered several options to configure a trike to make my dreams come true. He suggested contacting several dealerships and offered questions to be raised once I decided upon a dealer. Jim assisted me in the delivery from the dealership to his operation. During the conversion process, Jim sent me photos of the process and encouraged me to visit during the conversion. Once completed, he delivered my pride to me and provided a thorough orientation. Later he checked back to be sure that I was problem-free.

Now several months later, I can appreciate the quality of his workmanship. The attention to detail and the artistry of his work has created a tremendous sense of pride and comfort. I now am looking forward to fulfilling this dream. And my gratitude will always rest with Jim and the "Dream Makers" at M &J Motor Company in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

In the Wind Again

by Jim Parrish

Near the end of 2003 I had completed my second year of thoroughly enjoying the riding experiences on my latest "ride", a 2002 HD Dyna Low Rider. By the end of the year my future riding expectations changed dramatically. On December 2nd I suffered a stroke.

After five months of therapy and hard work I had recovered to the point that I started thinking about riding again. However, my whole right side was still weak and my balance was a little off kilter. In spite of my optimism regarding a full recovery I had to sit out the 2004 riding season. By the end of 2004 I had made good progress on the road to recovery but because of lingering problems I did not feel fully comfortable with the idea of getting back on two wheels. With encouragement and support from my wife and my best friend/riding buddy Dick I started looking at three-wheeling.

It wasn't long before I realized that a trike would be a very practical option to resolving my strength and balance issues and that a Lehman conversion was the only way to go. So, I sold the Low Rider and bought a Sportster (there were good reasons for this course of action) and had the Sporty converted with a Bandit kit. Fortunately, I had easy access to a local authorized dealer, M & J Motor Company in Martinsburg, WV. They did a good job of converting and then gave me enough personal attention to get me to the point of understanding the differences in handling between two wheels and three.

I started my new riding experiences on the trike in March 2005 and within a short time I was sold on the fun of three-wheeling. I feel safe, the ride is comfortable and I can keep up with "the pack" with no problems on interstate or country roads. In fact, the trike out-corners the two-wheelers in tight turns!

Thank you Lehman for giving me the opportunity to pursue my passion for riding in the face of my physical limitations. You have given me the ability to be "in the wind" again.
